What is the Bible about?

Dr Timothy Keller
Martha and I were listening to Dr Keller's message on the way to Martha's mom today.  He concluded the message with this summary:

Jesus is the true and better Adam who passed the test in the garden and whose obedience is imputed to us.
Jesus is the true and better Abel who, though innocently slain, has blood now that cries out, not for our condemnation, but for acquittal.
Jesus is the true and better Abraham who answered the call of God to leave all the comfortable and familiar and go out into the void not knowing wither he went to create a new people of God.
Jesus is the true and better Isaac who was not just offered up by his father on the mount but was truly sacrificed for us. And when God said to Abraham, “Now I know you love me because you did not withhold your son, your only son whom you love from me,” now we can look at God taking his son up the mountain and sacrificing him and say, “Now we know that you love us because you did not withhold your son, your only son, whom you love from us.”
Jesus is the true and better Jacob who wrestled and took the blow of justice we deserved, so we, like Jacob, only receive the wounds of grace to wake us up and discipline us.
Jesus is the true and better Joseph who, at the right hand of the king, forgives those who betrayed and sold him and uses his new power to save them.
Jesus is the true and better Moses who stands in the gap between the people and the Lord and who mediates a new covenant.
Jesus is the true and better Rock of Moses who, struck with the rod of God’s justice, now gives us water in the desert.
Jesus is the true and better Job, the truly innocent sufferer, who then intercedes for and saves his stupid friends.
Jesus is the true and better David whose victory becomes his people’s victory, though they never lifted a stone to accomplish it themselves.
Jesus is the true and better Esther who didn’t just risk leaving an earthly palace but lost the ultimate and heavenly one, who didn’t just risk his life, but gave his life to save his people.
Jesus is the true and better Jonah who was cast out into the storm so that we could be brought in.
Jesus is the real Rock of Moses, the real Passover Lamb, innocent, perfect, helpless, slain so the angel of death will pass over us. He’s the true temple, the true prophet, the true priest, the true king, the true sacrifice, the true lamb, the true light, the true bread.
The Bible’s really not about you – it’s about HIM!

Relationships. For Richer or Poorer

Tuesday will be 5 years since Renee departed this earth and entered the gates of glory. We are left to grieve her absence here.

Pastor Delbert:
Relationships. Everyone drags things with them that makes relationships hard. Serve one like good stewards. With whatever gifts you have received. God has given us the gift of Love. We all have enough love but may not be aware of
it. Sometimes we fail to grow.

RRSPs are on our minds. But we forget to build relational funds. Plan today to build better relationships. Read Gary's book. The 4 seasons of relationships
1. Romantic lasts for a week after the I do
2. Reality. The dream has become unattainable. No makeup and weird noises coming from the other one. So outrageous. Embarrassing.
3. Resentment winter. If you can't get over that then the relationship falters. Negotiate the differences. don't live in seperate igloos. Love becomes a choice. It is tested. Paul says that in this season you need forgiveness kindness and get clothed in love.
4. Rebuilding. Few people make it into this season. It takes effort. BREAKDOWNS can happen any time. Loss midlife crises can do it.
What are God's standards.
Feed your soul daily. Read God's word. Don't comprise your love. Drink water from your own well. Share life with your spouse. Don't hide behind other activities. Just saying sorry doesn't work. Make changes for the better. Ask and give forgiveness. Release like God released you.

Ephesians deals with relationships.
W. V. Had some struggles and he walked out on her and 2 kids. Changed when he realized that he needed to change. Kids prayed for dad daily. Now still have troubled from time to time.
L. K. He is task oriented. They make financial decisions together. Problem is time together. Kids can drive us crazy. Love them very much. Not always kind to each other. God, change me. Have a granddaughter and the whole family goes to the same church. Everything is purrfect. I'm stupidly in love with my granddaughter.
V. I cried to God. He provided for me. It was hard. I cried a lot. I reached out. Even with a spouse around you, you need to touch your sisters. W. God and my family forgave me. The chicken is involved but the pig is committed at breakfast. When you ask God to help us be committed separation is no longer an option.
K. We sat together and made a plan to stay together and make our marriage better.

Grow in your love for God. Make your relationship work. God created us and will sustain us.

Sign your commitment again.

Persons. Some names are mentioned only once in the Bible. We tend to concentrate on the big names and pay them respect.
We tend to do that today. We honor the movers and the shakers. God honors the lowly.
2 Biblical names from Rom 16. The chapter has more than 30 names including many women who were used by God in the growth of the kingdom.
Some scholars think that Romans chapter 16 was added later. A benediction at the end of chapter 15 suggests that is the end of the letter. Did Paul add these people so others can verify the accuracy?
Tertius says he wrote this letter. Paul was almost blind and signed some of his dictation.
In the ancient world they thought that people could not think and write at the same time.
How many times must Paul have said: now where was I?
Tertius was a skilled scribe. He had enough self esteem to mention himself. His work was invaluable to the work of God.
Phoebe was a wealthy woman. Paul recommended her to the church of Rome. She was trusted to carry the letter to Rome.
Benefactor patron was needed to write the letter. It cost $30,000 to write the original scroll. Paul needed a sponsor.
2 people in the background. Inconspicuous and indispensable to the kingdom.
Many people today contribute behind the scenes. Audio, bulletin printing.

Relationships: The Log & the Speck

Video vignette: I will not press charges. All I ask is that you change. I'm sorry.

Pastor Del
Www.EasTview.org

The depth of our relationships is proportional to how much reveal about ourselves.
Prov 28:13 conceal transgressions=not prosper. Confession leads to compassion.
Matth 7:1-5 judge not. Take the log out of your eye so you can take the speck out of your neighbour's eye. We build walls. I'm not as good as you think I look.
We have shortcomings.
Bitterness is cutting.

What is your body language? Do you roll your eyes at everyone? Are you legalistic?  Is there a root of bitterness? It is always destructive.
The Mark. See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God. Release the other person  of their debt. Forgiveness is at the core of the gospel. Release.
If you forgive others you will be forgiven.
The Nature. Unforgiveness creates trouble. Pointing the speck in other's eyes. Let all bitterness be put away.
The Result: If we let bitterness build up in our lives it defiles.

Rebuild. Forgive, release. Put on a heart of compassion. Love, the perfect bond of unity.
Justice. To pay back.
Mercy. God doesn't give us what we deserve.
Grace. Getting good that we don't deserve.

Panel discussion.
Jim Cory Lisa Jesse
Focus on annoyance and it gets me out of my anger.
Remove the log and you can see clearly.
As Jesus forgives true forgiveness does not keep score. It wipes the slate clean. God commands us to listen. We can be right.
Unrealistic expectations cause upset. Why do we feel upset? There is more to the story.
The most valuable things in life you can't put a price on. Relationships. Grace.
Anger is a choice.
There is brokenness in life. Is there hope?
God loves everyone of us. Turn it over to Jesus and there is hope.
Tackle the issues. Pray with others. Take the risk. Talk to a friend that needs healing. Pray with them.

Why do loved ones have to die? I am the thorn in your brow but, Jesus, you loved me anyway.

Sustaining Relationships

Pastor Delbert: Relationships. Gifts. We all have buckets of problems. Guilt, lack of acceptance, self-hatred, hatred in general.

If we walk into a relationship with heavy buckets and things snap because we don't want to talk about it and we can't carry our bucket and the other person's bucket.

Serve one another in love.
What interferes with that?
Disrespect for differences. Denial of the right to feel.
Failure to grow. We are all made differently. Growth happens in different ways. Sometimes things get too busy for us to grow.

1John 4.7 Love is from God. Build.

God is so good. He cares for you. Draw on God to understand and help you carry the bucket. Draw on God to help us love each other.

Marianne, Dave, Nicole,Tracy, Mark: we were designed to love each other and we need to figure out what our love languages are. Men, you need to buy a dozen roses for your love every 2 weeks.

Commandment
Those who love God must love their brother and sister also.

Celebrate the love of Christ's last supper.
