Are we basically good or bad? Both. We are broken. Good to begin with. Sin = Not together. We are infected with sin. Created in God's image. A worm is a worm. It's OK for it to live in the mud.
We have imputed righteousness. Justified = just as if I'd never sinned. Luther called it Snow covered dung
Imparted righteousness. A new heart.
For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

God Rightousified Abraham
What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter? What does Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."

A financial metaphor. Credited. Your account has been credited. A gift. Not earned. Gratuities. God doesn't owe you. Thank God for the gift.
However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

God is putting the broken pieces together. This is good news for the broken. Not so much for the "good". Jesus calls the sinners.
